Dr Kwesi Botchwey is reported to have died today that is, 19 November in the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on his sick bed.


About Dr Kwesi Botchwey:

Dr Kwesi Botchwey was a Ghanaian government official and Professor of Practice in Development Economics at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University. Botchwey was Minister for Finance and Economic Planning from 1982 to 1995. 

Dr Kwesi Botchwey, formerly served as a finance minister during the military regime of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) from 1982 to 1991 and later in the constitutional period of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from 1992 to 1995.


Dr Botchwey is reported to have died today 19th November 2022, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where he has been admitted for serious medication.


Dr Botchwey was Born on 3rd September 1944. As of 19th November, 2022 which was his death day, Dr Botchwey was 78.


He will go down in the history books of Ghana as the longest serving Finance Minister. He served in office alongside Ghana’s longest serving head of state, the late former President, Jerry John Rawlings.


Dr Botchwey, the late economist had his secondary school education at the Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School in Ghana. Dr Botchwey held an LLB from the University of Ghana, an LLM from Yale Law School and a doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School.


He taught at the University of Zambia, the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and the University of Ghana. Other notable previous assignments of Dr Botchwey were being an advisor to the World Bank on the 1997 World Development Report(WDR).


Among other appointments, he served as a member and chairman of the IMF‘s Group of Independent Experts, which conducted the first ever external evaluation of the Enhanced Structural Adjustment Facility, and as an advisor to the UNDP‘s UN Special Initiative on Africa.

 He was also as an advisor to the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM).
