In order to complete a multi-year initiative with the European Commission on the recovery of wild bird species with unfavorable conservation status, including wildfowl, shorebirds, and land birds, we are searching for a motivated individual to join our Global Species Recovery team.
Gathering data on risks and their respective effects on species demography, as well as on remedies, management interventions, and measures done by responsible authorities at various scales, would be a vital component of the position. You will be able to interpret scientific and policy-related material into various sorts of reports and will need exceptional writing and analytical abilities.
This position will collaborate closely with colleagues in the RSPB's Global Species Recovery and Conservation Science and Policy departments, other European research institutes, and the Spanish Institute for Game and Wildlife Research (IREC), the organization's external project consortium lead partner. It will communicate with authorities from various organizations worldwide, go to (virtual) international conferences, and help with the linguistic analysis of technical documentation.
You must be upbeat, organized, adaptable, and educated about the ecology and conservation requirements of birds in the UK and Europe, especially those species for whom hunting may be an important factor.

Essential knowledge, abilities, and experience
- A degree in a field related to the conservation of birds, or the equivalent in training/experience.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook), as well as information-sharing and collaboration technologies (Sharepoint).
- A thorough understanding of the conservation concerns that impact birds in the UK and Europe.
- Working knowledge of conservation relationships and project teams.
- Effective cooperation with a wide range of coworkers, external partners, and both technical and non-technical audiences is made possible by excellent communication abilities.
- Excellent written communication abilities in English, especially expertise in producing technical papers on conservation and the capacity to comprehend and communicate the strength of the scientific data supporting a certain conservation project or conservation policy perspective.
- Ability to establish and sustain productive working relationships with a variety of coworkers, outside partners, and contacts, who may have various degrees of technical competence, unique opinions, and distinct priority objectives.
- Good organizational and time management abilities, the capacity to meet deadlines set by coworkers, company procedures, or external partners, independence, self-motivation, and the capacity to utilize initiative to solve problems are all desirable.
- Possibility and willingness to occasionally go to the UK and Europe to see business associates, partners, and connections.
Desirable Knowledge, Experience, And Skills
- A higher education certification in a topic important to animal conservation.
- Understanding the dynamics of species populations, particularly how productivity and survival play a role in the conservation of species.
- knowledge of using indicators (such as population trends) to gauge and direct progress towards conservation goals as well as planning instruments for conservation, such as species action plans.
- Experience in worldwide conservation projects, as well as the capacity to collaborate across cultures and stakeholder perspectives.
- Awareness of the RSPB, its variety of conservation strategies and work initiatives, and how it may best accomplish global conservation via collaboration and participation in policy processes.
Fixed-term (expires March 31, 2026) A full-time position with a 37.5-hour workweek is anticipated to begin by early September 2023.
