UTAG Threatens To Embark On An Indefinite Strike Action

Information reaching us indicates that UTAG and other labour Unions declare their intention to embark on an indefinite Strike Action effective 27th December 2022.

The main reason is due to the Government’s decision to introduce a debt exchange programme.

UTAG recently announced to the general public that the association has agreed to call off the strike action which started in October 2022.

UTAG embarked on a series of strike actions in 2022 which has affected the academic calendar of every university in Ghana.

Every semester of the 2021 and 2022 academic calendar has been affected by strike actions due to the failure of the government to meet the demands of the University Teachers Association of Ghana.

UTAG's recent decision to embark on indefinite strike action is not due to the failure of the government to settle the arrears of the association but rather the decision of the government to introduce a debt exchange programme.

This debt exchange programme is said to affect the pension of all public workers in Ghana, particularly UTAG members, both retired and yet-to-retire workers of the state.

The exchange programme will affect the pension arrears of workers.

That is, it will reduce the pension payments of every member of UTAG which is a disadvantage.

Due to this dissatisfaction, UTAG openly threatens the government of Ghana with an indefinite strike on the 27th of December, 2022.

UTAG is urging the government to withdraw its decision on the exchange programme which will in the long run hurt the association.
